Operation Encompass
Operation Encompass was first trialled in February 2011. The aim of the scheme is to streamline information sharing between the Police and education settings. As we have learnt from previous serious case reviews, this information sharing is vital for protecting our young people from harm.
David Carney-Haworth (Joint Creator of Operation Encompass) stated; "sadly domestic abuse is prevalent across all tiers of our society and in many cases there are children present in this situations. Research tells us that these children are negatively affected by experiencing that domestic abuse. That is why living in a household where there is domestic abuse is seen as an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE). This scheme brings domestic abuse out into the open and enables schools to show that they will support, without judgement, families and children who are experiencing this abuse."
Children are negatively impacted by experiencing domestic abuse and without early intervention and support this negative impact can last through a child's life course. Domestic abuse can impact upon all factors for a young person including; social, psychological, physical, academic, emotional and behavioural outcomes.
This Operation ensures that information is shared at the earliest opportunity, to enable schools to offer support to children and families experiencing domestic abuse. It enables appropriate support to be given, dependent upon the needs and wishes of the child. It aims to secure better outcomes for children, to enable schools to better understand the impact living with domestic abuse has on children. From this awareness, schools can hopefully better understand a child's lived experience, in order to support and nurture each child, improving their day-to-day lives and future.
At SENse Learning, we are proud to be part of this Operation.
